Session Summary

How to Combat Antiblackness in the Academy as a Graduate Student

Mon, April 12, 11:10am to 12:40pm EDT (11:10am to 12:40pm EDT), AERA Committees, Graduate Student Council Paper and Symposium Sessions 2

Session Type: Invited Speaker Session

Abstract

Racism is a common word used to explain all aspects of systemic disparities often experienced by communities of color worldwide. Racism however fails to capture what Black people are experiencing (Ross, 2020). Anti-blackness creates a theoretical understanding of the worldwide disdain, disregard, and disgust for the Black existence (Ross, 2020). The absence of humility for Black humanity and persistent violence towards Black communities encompasses why anti-blackness in education continues to be harmful. This panel will discuss how graduate students can combat anti-blackness within the academy.
