Session Summary

Grad Social: Building a Graduate Student Network During a Global Pandemic

Sun, April 11, 2:30 to 4:00pm EDT (2:30 to 4:00pm EDT), AERA Committees, Graduate Student Council Paper and Symposium Sessions

Session Type: Business Meeting

Abstract

Participating in graduate peer mentorship is linked to positive effects in career, academic, social, and psychological outcomes (Lorenzetti et al., 2019). However, forming communities was challenging even before remote instruction became the norm across US campuses. In this session, members of the Graduate Student Council will talk about how they have built and sustained communities over the past year, including the reformation of the GSC Campus Liaisons program. Speakers will provide attendees with peer mentorship strategies, tips to move through technology burnout, and suggestions for starting your own community. At the end of this session, attendees will leave with a “conference crew” and with plans to meet up once again during the Annual Meeting to reconnect and discuss exciting research.
