In this symposium we present research on cultural diversity in a Western-European educational context. Although cultural diversity is a universal topic in educational research, specific histories and backgrounds of diverse societies may impact the way educational context provide more or less equal learning opportunities for students from varying racial and ethnic backgrounds.
Also the requirements that teachers need to meet in order to provide education for diverse youth may depend on the socio-political context of schools and classrooms. We aim to explore how general concepts and theories apply to the specific context of Western Europe (i.e. The Netherlands). We will present studies in primary and secondary education.
