Cultural Considerations in Career Counseling of International Students

Abstract

Cultural attributes play an important role in the success or failure of international students in their career development in different cultural contexts. This paper discusses a feasibility case study detailing a typical career transition faced by an international student, particularly focusing on cultural identity in international career context, cultural dynamics in the counseling relationships, and cultural conception of career problems of an international student in the U.S. by using the cultural formulation approach. It also sheds light on what career counselors could consider in culturally connected counseling when working with their international student populations and promote cultivating equitable education systems for the future.
