Education Fever and Student Math Achievement in Korea: A Multilevel Approach

Abstract

Education fever, which reflects the parental desire to help their children to lead academically and professionally successful lives, has been prominent in Korea due to the competitive education system centered around college admissions. While education fever is seen as an important gateway for student success, there are potential consequences including the undervaluing of public education and lower levels of student life satisfaction. Through the application of a multilevel modeling approach on the Seoul Education Longitudinal Study dataset, the paper explored student- and school-level factors reflective of education fever that are significantly associated with student math achievement in Seoul, Korea. The study provides education policymakers and practitioners a contextual understanding of factors that are associated with academic achievement in math.
