This paper discusses the Indian cottage at the Stonewall Jackson School, a reformatory in North Carolina, from 1933 to 1955. I have divided this study into three sections. The first section describes the operations of SJTS and focuses on the formal and vocational education programs at the reformatory. The second section examines the origins and operations of the Indian cottage as evidenced by the SJTS’ school newsletter and specific pieces of state legislation. The third section highlights the distinctions between the Indian Cottage and the rest of the reformatory and focuses on the lack of educational opportunities for Native American young men at SJTS.
