Transness in Schools: A Systematic Review of Literature Through a Trans of Color Critique

Fri, April 22, 2:30 to 4:00pm PDT (2:30 to 4:00pm PDT), Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, Floor: North Building, Lobby Level, Marriott Grand Ballroom 8

Abstract

This systematic literature review critically examines research from social science and education
databases that address transgender youth in and outside of k-12 education settings. A systematic
approach to selecting and analyzing articles combined with queer scavenging methodology were
employed to identify and analyze 153 peer-reviewed articles that met our criteria for inclusion.
Our analyses center more recent studies that trouble historically pathologizing and deficit
paradigms describing transgender young people. Additionally, given education and social
science research has historically neglected to situate the experiences of transgender people within
larger analyses of race, a trans of color critique is applied as a promising lens for future
education research.
