The Activity of Planning an Online Research Lesson

Abstract

We use Lesson Study (LS) with Preservice Teachers (PSTs) in a secondary mathematics methods course. Two LS teams facilitated by a mentor teacher (MT) gathered online to plan a research lesson to be taught at their field placement. Using the Cultural, Historical, Activity Theory (CHAT), we identified the elements in the activity system when planning the research lesson focusing on the interplay between artifacts, rules, and division of labor. We found that the integration of the artifacts, especially the learning management system known as the Teacher Desmos Activity Builder (TDAB), supported the planning process. While the rules provided stability to the interactions, the flexibility of the division of labor afforded by the TDAB allowed for sustained collaborations and agency.
