This paper highlights a Family as Faculty (FAF) approach centered on the expertise of mothers of Color of children with disabilities to address and transform preservice special education teachers’ (PSETs) deficit-driven ideologies of difference to asset-based ones. For this specific qualitative study, data are collected from 2016 – 2019 and are analyzed from individual and focus group interviews and classroom presentations involving Black and Latina mothers (n = 4). The study is analyzed through an interacting framework that is both interdisciplinary (Waitoller & Thorius, 2016) and derived from expanded FAF understandings (Author, 2020, 2021). Three main findings through a deductive thematic analysis surfaced implicating the need for PSETs’ continued critical reflection of their own implicit biases around race and disability.
