Preparing School Leaders to Use Data Ethically

Sat, April 23, 8:00 to 9:30am PDT (8:00 to 9:30am PDT), Manchester Grand Hyatt, Floor: 2nd Level, Harbor Tower, Harbor Ballroom E

Abstract

This demonstration session addresses challenges related to using data ethically and responsibly, with a focus on preparing preservice and practicing school leaders. The session includes active demonstration of and engagement with sample teaching scenarios rooted in practice which highlight issues of data use and ethics as embedded in typical administrator duties, from communication with researchers to mentoring/ teacher support activities to the use of in-school data displays. Several scenarios are contextualized in the virtual sphere—a challenge that emerged pointedly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The session introduces participants to a free new tool—an extensive collection of brief teaching scenarios developed in collaboration with a nonprofit focused on data privacy, an educational research organization, and a university-based leadership preparation program.
