Abstract

Using a critical narrative approach, two researchers describe the educational challenges, successes and trajectories of one diverse, high-needs student from an urban area. “David” graduated college against all odds. The researchers use two in-depth interviews--one conducted at the end of his senior year of high school and again post college graduation--to gain insights into what David identifies as important to his achievements. The overarching theme of “Being Known” is threaded throughout his responses and includes (1) feeling part of a learning community; (2) educational and emotional support; and (3) personal care. David’s narrative demonstrates that college access in-and-of itself is not sufficient; the experiences and realities of diverse students continues to be a pressing need.
