In this study, we explored the use of performance tasks as tools to support teacher educators (TEs) in providing preservice teachers (PSTs) with opportunities to learn core practices that make up the work of subject matter teaching. Sixty regular and special education TEs were asked to review performance tasks focused on elementary mathematics and reading language arts. After reviewing the tasks the TEs provided feedback on the value of these tasks as formative assessment tools that provide opportunities for PSTs to try out and rehearse these practices and to receive feedback from their peers and from TEs. Survey responses indicate that a large majority of TEs see value in these tasks for supporting PST learning.
