"Everyone's Business": Improving Inclusion of Students With Disabilities in Higher Education in Ireland

Abstract

The increasing demand for equitable higher education necessitates a transformation in how to design an inclusive higher education system. Adopting a systems-thinking approach, this study explored the experiences of students with disabilities in higher education in Ireland and the ways to develop technology-friendly inclusive university campuses for all. In-depth interviews with students with disabilities and other stakeholders representing higher education, non-profit organizations, and government bodies revealed critical institution-wide areas for re-thinking and transforming the higher education ecosystem to become an equitable, technology-friendly inclusive environment for all students. The study highlighted the importance of equal access, shared responsibility, staff development, institutional commitment, and student partnership in developing an inclusive, barrier-free university setting for all students, including those with disabilities.
