Professional Learning Networks: Definition, Conceptual Model, and Research Recommendations

Abstract

Educator Professional Learning Networks (PLNs) are promising for achieving school improvement. At the same time, a range of studies in this area show that results, especially at the student level, are often mixed at most. These studies also report multiple conceptual and methodological challenges in research into PLNs. The aim of this theoretical discussion paper is to synthesize and connect to previous studies by combining and reflecting on their findings and recommendations. Moreover, we aim to contribute to the methodological development of the field by giving recommendations for research that can link PLNs processes to changes in outcomes for students. For the latter, we will also go into making use of insights from the field of big data in education.
