How Do Adolescent Refugee Girls Experience Resettlement?

Tue, April 26, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), SIG Virtual Rooms, SIG-Adolescence and Youth Development Virtual Paper Session Room

Abstract

From 2015 to 2021, Canada as one of the top destinations, admitted 161,275 refugees, 76,905 of whom were women and girls (Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada, 2021). While Canada is committed to offering Settlement Programs to female refugees, previous studies have shown that experiences of racism, discrimination and gender inequality prevent or limit refugee girls from accessing available services such as mental health support and quality education (Ratković et al., 2017). This is troubling, as limited access to necessary resources can leave girls vulnerable to sexual exploitation and violence and make them even more invisible (Noble et al., 2017). The ultimate aim of this study is to amplify the voices of adolescent refugee girls through Participatory Visual and Arts-based Methodology.
