Personal, Work, and Client-Related Burnout: A Statewide Study of Superintendents

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore P-12 school superintendent burnout. P-12 school superintendents (N = 124) completed the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) which addresses three constructs: 1.) personal burnout, 2.) work-related burnout, and 3.) client-related burnout. Participants reported they do experience burnout, especially in respect to the CBI work-related items followed by personal burnout, client-related administrators/teachers, client-related school board, and client-related students/parents. Items within item subsets had positive and high correlations. Correlations between item subsets ranged from .47 to .78. Correlations between item sets and professional and district characteristics did not reach significance with two exceptions. The number of students in the district correlated moderately with client-related students and parents and client-related school board.
