Evaluating Online Class Participation in Higher Education: A Scoping Review

Abstract

Online classes add complexity to pedagogical approaches of evaluating student class participation. The corpus of literature on online class participation is massive and thus challenging for instructors to draw on evidence-based research to inform their practice. We identified three key areas that could be of value to instructors - the technologies deployed for online class participation, theoretical underpinnings and criteria of the evaluation of online class participation. Using a scoping review, we developed a comprehensive protocol of search strategies; identified and screened relevant studies with explicit inclusion and exclusion criteria; charted out data; collated, summarized and reported relevant results. From these findings, we developed a 2x2 model which categorizes the criteria used in evaluating online class participation in included studies.
