Identity and Emotional Labor of Chinese Teaching-Research Officers as Teacher Educators

In response to the increased global research interest in teacher educators’ professional lives, this study explores the identity of Teaching-Research Officers, a particular group of teacher educators in China. Using focus group interviews to identify three representative cases for further individual interviews, and using Nvivo12 to code the interview data, this study finds that the structural constraints perceived by Teaching-Research Officers in identity were far greater than structural promotion, and the microstructure based on interpersonal relationships was the core element. The work of teacher educators was a kind of emotional labor, and the different emotional labor strategies of Teachers-Research Officers affected the type of identity. Finally, relevant suggestions are put forward from the perspective of establishing a stable identity.
