English Language Learners' Text-Based Interaction in Synchronous Computer-Mediated Communication

Abstract

To gain an understanding of the complex dynamics of online learning, this longitudinal study explored the developmental trends of 40 English language learners’ text-based interaction in an online setting featuring synchronous computer-mediated communication using social network analysis. Specifically, the text-based interaction data collected at six time points across one semester revealed a strong and stable teacher-centered interaction pattern, a stable participation rate with silent learners at the beginning largely remaining silent to the end, and an increasing tendency toward network cohesion and centrality over time. The study’s findings regarding the complex dynamics of an authentic process in SCMC language classrooms have a practical value, by pointing the way to more effective learning and less teaching anxiety during the ongoing pandemic.
