Influence of Danmaku in Informal Learning Videos on Foreign Language Learning Enjoyment

Abstract

Although Danmaku has been widely used on video platforms and provides new possibilities for a more interactive and connective online learning experience, less is known about its influence on language learning outcomes. This quasi-experimental study examined the effect of Danmaku on primary school students’ foreign language learning enjoyment. A 2x2-study (N = 136) with the presence of Danmaku (Danmaku vs. no Danmaku) and grade (middle vs. high) as between-subject factors revealed that Danmaku had a negative influence on foreign language grammar learning enjoyment. The significance of this study is that it showed that although Danmaku is an innovative educational technology, it may not be suitable under all circumstances.
