This study is situated in a high school pre-service teacher education program in Canada. It confirms competency-based postgraduate teacher training as a major advancement, but at the same time, it evokes critical issues of competency assessment. One source of concern is the translation of general competencies into the practice of pre-service teachers. Confusion around the application of competency programs in mentor assessments exposes a potential gap between the theory of competency-based education and practice. With 25 mentors and using the Delphi method, the authors analyze entrustable professional activities (EPAs) and level of responsibility which, together, constitute the profession, exploring them as a potential means to bridge the gap between the theoretical aspects of competency-based education and a mentor’s assessment practices.
