Understanding the Educational Experiences of Rural Latinx Youth During COVID-19: A Culturally Responsive Literacy Case Study

Abstract

The pandemic has had a profound impact on all students, especially on the children of immigrant Latinx farmworkers, which are one of the most educationally disenfranchised student populations in the U.S. Given that this youth are understudied and especially likely to experience substantial adversity during and post-pandemic, it is imperative for researchers to examine factors that contribute to their well-being, and how they can be empowered via culturally responsive literacy programs. This qualitative case study explored the educational experiences of (N = 9) rural Latinx youth the ages of 13 and 16 (M = 15.2) in the Midwest during the end of the pandemic. Implications for expanding critical thinking in current curricula and education are discussed.
