Learning From Collective Parent Action to Rebuild Education: A Research Agenda

Abstract

Our purpose is to establish a research agenda for understanding the ways in which children learn and thrive when their parents and family members engage in collective action groups for social, economic, and racial justice. This agenda is informed by interdisciplinary critical frameworks, as well as our experiences and research as community-engaged scholars working with Black and Latinx families who engage in collective action. We raise three main themes: 1) the erasure and subjugation of BIPOC in educational policies, institutions, and standards; 2) how families collectively teach and organize to thrive within these constraints; and 3) why learning from these processes matters for educational equity in the U.S.
