Learning analytics (LA) has been used in massive open online courses (MOOCs) research and practices. This systematic review (166 articles from 2011-2021) synthesizes the trends and critical issues of LA in MOOCs to provide implications for future research and practices. The findings identified the Journal of Learning Analytics and Journal of Computer Assisted Learning as having published the most LA in MOOCs articles, besides the conference proceedings. It was also revealed that LA was used more frequently for the purpose of research than for practice (“learning and teaching”). Approximately 60% of studies reviewed adopted log data and achievement data as the primary data sources and involved interdisciplinary collaborations. Detailed discussions and implications are presented at the end of the paper.
