Using Joint Display for Building Between Phases in a Sequential Study: Emphasizing a Participatory Approach

Abstract

In the explanatory sequential mixed methods research design, integration at the methods level occurs between quantitative and qualitative phases. Because the quantitatively driven first phase informs the second qualitative phase, statistical findings alone often inform the qualitative phase. However, in studies guided by an action-oriented or participatory approach, this can be a missed opportunity to involve participant voices. This methodological discussion presents the integration of quantitative and qualitative survey data from the first phase of an explanatory sequential study using a joint display, which is then used to inform subsequent qualitative data collection. This strategy serves as an example of methods level integration for action-oriented studies by facilitating the use of potentially rich data provided by open-ended survey responses.
