Becoming Visible: A Case Study of a Black Student's Help-Seeking Practices in a Heterogeneous Classroom

Abstract

This paper is a micro-analysis of one focus student, Prince, and his challenges with gaining adults’ attention in a summer coding camp with a 2:1 student/teacher ratio. I will consider how a student’s identity influences the attention seeking practices available to them, and how such affordances can create an inequitable playing field in which some students are ignored, and others consume most of the adult attention.
