Measurement Invariance Testing Using Multiple-Group Confirmatory Factor Analysis: A Systematic Review

Abstract

Testing measurement invariance is a critical methodological step of construct validation in the field of psychological assessment and education. This study investigated the psychological and educational literature to determine what applied researchers are using and reporting from measurement invariance studies. One hundred and forty-four multiple-group confirmatory factor analysis articles published between January 2020 and December 2020 were systematically reviewed. Information from each article was documented according to three major themes: data screening procedures, invariance testing steps, as well as model fit and outcome criteria reported. Results, suggestions, and implications for future reporting and research are provided.
