Creating Healthy Urban Teacher Education Ecologies: The Case of STEM Power

Sat, April 23, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), Division Virtual Rooms, Division K - Section 05: Pre-service Teacher Education Coursework: Curriculum and Pedagogy to Improve Teacher Knowledge and Instruction Virtual Roundtable Session Room 1

Abstract

We push on the concept of coherence in urban teacher education programs by introducing the framework of healthy ecologies of urban teacher education. Using mixed methods analysis of program documents and participants’ survey responses and reflections, we assess a series of interventions designed to bolster our ecology. These interventions focused on reorienting the program curriculum, particularly in terms of anti-racism and social justice content, and strengthening synergies in its implementation and enactment across multiple roles and contexts.
