The Effect of Community of Inquiry Framework–Informed Facebook Discussion Activities on English-Speaking Performances

Abstract

Through a mixed method design, this study investigated the effect of the Community of Inquiry (CoI)-informed Facebook discussion activities on the English speaking performances of Bangladeshi undergraduates. A Facebook group was maintained for both the treatment and control group; however, the discussion activities were completed only by the treatment group. Quantitative data revealed a significant difference between the initial-test and post-test speaking scores for both the groups. However, no such difference was observed in post-test scores between the two groups. Qualitative data revealed that Facebook was helpful for both the groups in improving their performances. Findings and implications will be discussed.
