Teachers’ instructional practices have implications for students’ engagement and student learning. However, little research has examined the relationship between the depth of instructional practices and students’ behavioral engagement in the classroom. Addressing this gap, our study examines the depth of teacher instructional practices and how they are associated with student engagement. We find the depth of teacher instructional practices varies based on subjects as well as student tracks. Moreover, we find consistent evidence that students are more actively engaged and less passively engaged when teachers engage in more meaningful and higher level instructional practices.
