Critical Spatial Literacies: Youth Inquiries Into Place and Space

This practitioner inquiry draws from a four-week multiliteracy program with twelve student participants from the Middle East who engaged in critical spatial investigations of respectively selected communities. The winter program promoted critical spatial literacies, which are grounded in critical literacy practices of conducting deeper examinations of structural conditions and understanding flows of power within local and global contexts (Comber, 2001, 2006, 2013). This study revealed that within the context of a community-based inquiry project, students identified assets of various communities, structural barriers to wider acknowledgement, and visions of more just futures. This work showcases the reflections and expressions of three focal participants who examined everyday conditions, produced commentary about structural (in)equity, and made clear their aspirations for social change.
