A Study of One School District's Success in Latinx Student Dropout Prevention

Abstract

This mixed-methods study uses four years of dropout and student survey data from a large Pacific Northwest school district and in-depth interviews of key district personnel, to gather information about the strategies, approaches, and programs the district is using to achieve their dramatic results in reducing dropouts.

Findings suggest that social capital is the key construct supporting increased student graduation, with academic confidence, familial support, student voice, and options capital all contributing to the establishment of solid relationships that are at the center of the district's success. Implications for practice and suggestions for future research are discussed.
