Abstract

STEM faculty are less likely to be trained as teachers, and in part because of the focus on research, they do not always seek out development opportunities. Given this, group development activities that depend on peer interactions hold appeal, leading to a growing body of research on collegiality in development activities. However, the lack of an agreed upon definition and operationalization for collegiality make it difficult to purposefully use to inform or tailor faculty development. To this end, we propose an existing framework—organizational citizenship behavior (OCB)—as a more useful lens for planning, monitoring, and evaluating development activities. Our findings highlight how faculty developers may use OCB to support development and increase faculty willingness to participate in development opportunities.
