Early Career Teachers (White) Engaging in Collaboration Toward Racial Literacies Development

Tue, April 26, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), SIG Virtual Rooms, SIG-Critical Educators for Social Justice Virtual Roundtable Session Room

Abstract

This presentation outlines a university-community participatory collaborative model consisting of three white, early career elementary teachers and one white doctoral student. Each team member volunteered to be involved with the intention of developing their racial literacies through critical conversations about race, ethnicity, and Indigeneity with the ultimate goal of improving their teaching in culturally responsive, sustaining, and revitalizing ways for their students. Following Guinier’s theory of racial literacy and Horsford’s four-step progression toward racial equality in education, these teachers propose a model for participating in such collaborative efforts. The teachers give specific attention to accountability, disposition, sharing, routine, and story in developing their own racial literacies
