When Bias Kills: Using Applied Theater in Health Care Education to Disrupt Implicit Bias

Sat, April 23, 8:00 to 9:30am PDT (8:00 to 9:30am PDT), Manchester Grand Hyatt, Floor: 3rd Level, Harbor Tower, Hillcrest AB

Abstract

Abstract

This performance/demonstration is based upon an interdisciplinary collaboration among 3 faculty members (Nursing/Health Sciences/Drama), and 3 graduate students (Curriculum Studies, Psychology, and Social Justice and Equity). Working with Participatory Theatre’s (PT) cast, they devised a series of social justice vignettes for live and video dissemination that explored themes related to implicit bias in healthcare and other disciplines, to invite critical reflection on one’s attitudes, behaviours, assumptions, etc. Building upon existing scholarship and personal experiences they employed the playbuilding process (Author, 2016) to create evocative (Barone, 1990) vignettes exploring implicit bias (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0Xi6bgTcKQ) “as a pathway to freedom and transformation” (AERA 2021, call).
