A Survey Research Study of Music Education Faculty: Demographics as Related to Indicators of Job Satisfaction and Stress

Abstract

Via survey research methods, we examined music education faculty members’ demographics, job satisfaction, and job stressors. More specifically, we examined demographic information for current music education faculty, the factors that seem to influence music education faculty members’ levels of job satisfaction, music education faculty members’ primary stressors, and the ways in which stressors reportedly affect music education faculty members’ job satisfaction, also by type of institution in which they work. Findings revealed that academic autonomy, support from colleagues, hours of sleep, parental responsibilities, and (un)certainties surrounding the tenure process affect music education faculty members’ reported levels of job satisfaction and stress. Findings also revealed that faculty members’ stressors significantly vary among institution types, also as related to research and teaching priorities.
