English Academic Writing and Publishing in Global Context: A Glance Into Uzbekistan Higher Education

Abstract

This 2022 Annual Meeting presentation raises awareness of the challenges faced by EFL scholars regarding publishing in English-medium international journals and the consequences of the dominance of English in academic publishing. It reports on a mixed-methods study of the academic writing and publishing choices and challenges of scholars and graduate students in Uzbekistan universities. Discussion of qualitative findings and implications focus on participants’ publication practices, how they choose to publish and how these choices are affected by pressures at different levels. Many participants suggested that publishing in English increased visibility in international forums with international recognition of their work but at the expense of support for national and regional dissemination of knowledge in their fields.
