Mon, April 25, 11:30am to 1:00pm PDT (11:30am to 1:00pm PDT), SIG Virtual Rooms, SIG-Paulo Freire Virtual Roundtable Session Room

Abstract

Drawing on critical race theory and data collected over the course of a year, this case study explores the historical link between black masculinity and the legacy of slavery by drawing on the vibrant stories of fifty participants taking part in such study and relevant literature. This study demonstrates ways and the degree to which this link continues to influence the masculinity of men of African descent. It goes further to theorize how institutional racism has impacted the way many of these men have performed their maleness. Finally, drawing on preliminary findings, recommendations are made for further research on black masculinity.
