Although purported to be valued in schools, parent engagement within Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) is rarely seen, particularly among Latinx families. Virtual learning spaces during the pandemic school year necessitated families to engage in their children’s instruction in ways that were new to both families and teachers. In this case study of a dual language elementary school, I used family funds of knowledge (Moll et al., 1992) to analyze how teachers describe their experiences partnering with Latinx parents in virtual learning settings. This study documents how families have taken critical roles in Tier 1 instruction. In this new instructional environment, parents are positioned as los primeros maestros de sus hijos (the first teachers of their children).
