Abstract

This study was conducted in a Sports-based Youth Development (SBYD) program in
the mid-south of the US. The purpose was to investigate underserved youth’s
experience of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in a SBYD program grounded in
Teaching Personal Social Responsibility (TPSR). This study utilized semi-structured
interviews with 17 participants and non-participant observations with field notes. Four
themes were drawn through inductive analysis and constant comparison of the data
(Miles et al., 2014): love this program, support and teamwork, helps me understand,
and when I go back to school. This study provides rich qualitative evidence showing
TPSR can be an effective pedagogy to promote SEL. We advocate wider promotion
of validated pedagogical models in school-based and after-school SEL programs,
particularly TPSR.
