A Mixed-Methods Analysis of Postsecondary Music Aspirations Among Black and Hispanic High School Students

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore high school music students’ postsecondary education and career aspirations in music. The setting for this study was School District X, among the top 20 largest districts in the U.S., serving >132,000 students, more than 91% of whom are Black or Hispanic. Using an exploratory sequential mixed method design, I sought to understand a) teachers’ perceptions of students’ experiences, b) students’ reasons for enrolling/persisting in high school music, and c) factors influencing students’ desire to include or not include music as a postsecondary educational or career option. Mixed methods analysis revealed that music teachers have a nuanced understanding of students’ musical experiences but may lack awareness of other factors influencing students’ postsecondary aspirations.
