Enhancing Global Teacher Professional Development Through MOOC Camps: Case Studies From Brazil, Vietnam, and Peru

Abstract

This case study examined the organization, facilitation, and support for learner engagement in MOOC camps that occurred in Brazil, Vietnam, and Peru. The MOOC camp participants were English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers who enrolled in a global Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) focused on teaching English to young learners (TEYL). These EFL teachers also met regularly in-person at MOOC camps in their local region to discuss and apply their learning. Using the Academic Communities of Engagement framework (Borup et al., 2020), we analyzed semi-structured interviews from 19 MOOC camp participants. Thematic analysis revealed how these three MOOC camps were organized and facilitated, as well as the benefits of learning in MOOC camps through affective, behavioral, and cognitive engagements.
