Weaving Indigenous Education Into Your Practice: A Teacher's Resource Guide

Sat, April 23, 11:30am to 1:00pm PDT (11:30am to 1:00pm PDT), Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, Floor: South Building, Level 1, Solana

Abstract

Teachers in Ontario schools are expected to bring Indigenous education into their classrooms; yet many teachers feel under-prepared for this work. This session presents a guidebook designed for elementary and secondary teachers and teacher educators in universities. It is intended to guide teachers through the praxis of Indigenous education using resources—interviews, videos, and lesson plans—drawn from a broader, national, multi-year study (nccie.ca). The guidebook provides theory and examples. Then, two educators guide viewers through four lesson plans from the NCCIE website with connections to teaching in Ontario. For broader accessibility, the guide features a checklist for viewers from other school board jurisdictions to adapt the lesson plans to their contexts and other groups of Indigenous peoples.
