Differences of Developmental Education Instructional Strategies' Delivery at Community Colleges in Florida

Abstract

After implementing SB 1720 in Florida since 2014, the 28 Florida College System (FCS) institutions have the flexibility to deliver at least one of the four innovative DE instructional strategies: modularized, compressed, contextualized, and corequisite. Thus, it provides a unique opportunity to examine college choices regarding different DE instructional strategies. Using multinomial and logistic regression models, we found that colleges with more grants per FTE student had a lower likelihood of offering corequisite DE reading. In summary, colleges with more FTE instructors tended to provide more diverse math strategies and had a higher probability of providing corequisite math. In addition, colleges with higher grants per FTE tended to provide more contextualized but less modularized math for different subject areas.
