Challenges in Using Rating Scales to Document Students' Observations During Science Investigations (Poster 23)

Abstract

Observational skills are fundamental to science, and Likert-type scales are one way to help learners document observable characteristics during science investigations. However, it is unclear whether novices use rating scales accurately and consistently as a method for documenting scientific observations. This study examined the use of a 10-point scale to evaluate color similarity of insect specimens. Likert-scale ratings were compared to verbal explanations for twenty college-aged participants. Verbal observations mismatched selected ratings one-third of the time, and the accuracy depended upon learners’ judgments. Rating scores frequently aligned with negative verbal judgments (i.e., dissimilar) but not with positive judgments (i.e., similar). Findings suggest additional supports are needed for students to use rating scales accurately and consistently to document scientific observation.
