Online Learning During the Pandemic: Perceptions and Experiences of Teachers and Deaf Students in College

Abstract

This study explored the perceptions and experiences of teachers and Deaf students in tertiary Deaf Education on online learning during the pandemic in the Philippines. Utilizing a qualitative research design, researchers gathered information from 44 Deaf students and 13 teachers on the general attitude, experiences, and lessons learned during the pandemic. The data was analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings suggest that teachers and Deaf students perceive online learning satisfactorily, however, the quality of internet connection is a big factor in the challenges faced by Deaf students and their teachers, especially since online learning for Deaf students rely heavily on visual means. Recommendations and implications for the future of online learning of Deaf students are also discussed.
