Social Justice Initiatives in Canadian Public Urban Secondary Schools: Administrators' Perspectives

Abstract

This study explores the perspectives of administrators from six schools, two schools in three different Canadian cities (Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal), who speak to the regional and local social justice issues that impact their respective school communities. The thoughts of educational administrators are explored with the hopes of gaining insight on how their role contributes to school wide initiatives. Semi-structured interviews were conducted administrators. Analysis reveals that racism is a prominent issue that is addressed in all six schools, contextual circumstances and factors play a key role in administrators’ views on and approaches towards social justice in their school, and the major place given to students’ voice but also teachers’ perspective and attitude in administrators’ approach towards social justice.
