Stuart Tonemah: Leading the Way to Ensure Equitable Gifted Education Services for Native American Students

Abstract

Stuart Tonemah (b. 1941 - d. 2009) was a leader in two educational advocacy movements—American Indian education and gifted education. Across four decades, he held leadership roles and influenced national conversations and educational policy on students from indigenous and tribal communities. His contributions to our understanding of the Red Earth perspective and to the development of talents among First Nations, Native American, and Native Alaskan students are foundational for building equitable educational services for students today. The purposes of this biographical study are to present an integrated examination of his life and work and to preserve the story of his influence as a 20th century educator.
