Abstract

According to the National Academy of Sciences (2007a), “Without the participation of individuals of all racial/ ethnic backgrounds and genders, the increasing demand for workers in STEM fields will not be met, potentially compromising the position of the United States as a global leader” (p.1). Increasing the participation and persistence of currently underrepresented minorities in STEM education adds to the number of STEM practitioners in the nation’s STEM workforce. This study examines the effect of early exposure to STEM and enrollment in Advanced Placement (AP) and/ or International Baccalaureate (IB) classes on the persistence of Black students in STEM education using restricted access data from the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS: 2002) of the National Center for Education Statistics.
