To date, there are only few studies that focus on black African transnational doctoral students and their acculturation in American universities. This study therefore focuses on this particular student population and their acculturation- related issues in the U.S. Semi- structured interviews were used six sub-Saharan African international doctoral students to investigate how they navigate their lives in a different continent whilst pursuing a doctoral degree. Findings show that sub-Saharan African International doctoral students feel severely ostracized and encounter a number of difficulties that impede a smooth acculturation process. Implications and recommendations for future research are provided.
